Byung Woo Kim
Music Director and Conductor
Byung-Woo Kim is founder and Music Director of the CPYO. He is currently a faculty member at West Valley College Music Department. He was Concertmaster of the San Jose Symphony and the Juilliard Symphony. Mr. Kim has served on the faculties of the of the San Francisco International Summer Music Festival as Violin Professor and Conductor of the Festival Orchestra, the National Music Camp of Interlocken under the All-State Program and Summer Music Monterey, and Santa Clara University as violin professor. Since 1997 he has participated as a judge for the Irving M. Klein International String Competition.
Mr. Kim has received numerous Scholarships and Awards including the Orchestral Fellowships at both Aspen Music Festival and at the Grand Teton Orchestra Seminar.
As soloist Mr. Kim performed with San Jose Cleveland Ballet Orchestra, the San Jose Symphony, and the Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra, among others.
As a violinist he has concertized extensively throughout the country with numerous professional orchestras and performed chamber music including the complete Beethoven Sonata Series for the Beethoven Center at the San Jose State University. He has performed for movies at Lucas Skywalker studio and several audio recordings, such as a CD jazz album with Stephane Grappelli.
Mr. Kim holds Masters of Music degrees from both the Julliard School of Music and the University of Michigan. He continued further studies in the Doctor of Musical Arts Program at the University of Southern California. He has participated in the Farberman’s Conductors Institute in New York and the International Academy of Advanced Conducting with Dr. Leonid Korchmar.
Kyeong Hwa Kim
Program Director and Assistant Conductor
Ms. Kyeong Hwa Kim has been both a music educator and a performing cellist in Korea and the Bay Area. Along with her husband, Mr. Byung-Woo Kim, Kyeong founded the California Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CYPO) – that has performed several benefit concerts for charity organizations and most recently, at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Ms. Kim is also the founder of the Gift of Music Foundation – a Bay Area non-profit organization that encourages youth participation for social cause by young musical talents.
Ms. Kim is a faculty member at West Valley College Music Department. She is currently the Assistant Conductor of the California Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Ms. Kim has been on the faculty of the San Francisco International Summer Music Festival and is Artistic Director for the Gift of Music Foundation.
Ms. Kim is the winner and recipient of numerous competitions and awards. As soloist, she was invited to perform for the President of South Korea and has been featured artists of the PBS television program. She has also performed chamber music concerts with renowned artists including Koichiro Harada, the former 1st violinist of the Tokyo String Quartet. Ms. Kim has recorded CD albums abroad as well as here in the Bay Area. Born in Seoul, Korea, Kyeong Hwa Kim attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the Indiana University where she received her Bachelor and Masters of Music.
